Car Chase Ends With Officer Involved Shootout

On April 4, 2021 Dispatch received a report of domestic violence in the Birmingham, AL area. Responding Officers located the vehicle in North Birmingham, when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect.

The suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Desmon Montez Ray Jr. fled the traffic stop, leading Officers on a high speed chase. Only making it a few blocks, Ray crashed his vehicle in a chain link fence where he then exited the vehicle armed with a handgun.

Officers exit their cruiser moments after the crash took place and begin chasing Ray on foot. As Ray runs through the now damaged fence, he he fires a single shot at pursuing Officers as he attempts to make an escape into the back yard. Before Montez exits the yard, one Officer takes multiple shots, stopping Montez from fleeing or causing more harm.

Ray was wounded multiple times. When first responders arrived on the scene, medical aid was provided to Ray prior to him being transported to UAB Hospital. Ray would later succumb to his wounds.

The family has reported this as an unjust shooting and are looking for more answers. Fleeing the police and discharging a firearm at Officers seems justified to me... Let us know what you think in the comments below.
