Canadian Volunteers in Bakhmut, 2023

This GoPro-style footage shows Canadians who have volunteered for Ukraine ( "Recon Team Kilo") in a firefight with Russian forces. This incident occured during the fighting for Bakhmut last year, in 2023. Some of their faces have been blurred in order to protect their identities.

It's a little jarring to hear English in combat footage coming out of Ukraine, especially when it's pearls of Canadian wisdom such as "It just blew up the fucking tree in front of us, so don't move up there." The footage seems to be coming from the perspective of the squad leader, who makes the decision to move forward and provide suppressing fire in order to help other Ukrainian elements return to their position. He exhibits familiarity with the language as he communicates with UKR forces. At 01:07, a Canadian volunteer spots a Russian in close proximity, indicating how close the fighting got at Bakhmut.
