Footage reportedly shows an Anglophone separatist ambush against a Cameroon military convoy, but the exact date and location are unknown. The separatists have significantly increased the use of IEDs in their attacks on government troops in the latter half of 2021.

A civil war has been ongoing in Cameroon since 2016, but the source of the strife can be traced back over a hundred years to colonial times. The African nation was a German colony from 1884 until the German defeat in WWI in 1916, at which point the League of Nations divided it into two territories; one given to Britain and the other France.

Although significant restructurings due to independence and ground assimilated by Nigeria have occurred since then, the ongoing conflict is essentially: the English-speaking (Anglophone) separatists are fighting for freedom of their regions from the French-speaking (Francophone) majority that currently rules the country. The Anglophones claim they are not represented within the government while crude oil and other resources are being extracted from their western region by the government, and they receive no compensation or reinvestment returned.
