Hezbollah Fires “Grad” MLRS At IAF Airbase On Mt. Meron, Israel

This footage, released by Hezbollah media outlets and dated 27 April 2024, shows a Grad multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) being used to attack the Israeli Air Force control base on Mount Meron. In order to protect the identity of the crew and location of the launch site, large portions of the video have been obfuscated.

The BM-21 “Grad” missile launching system is a ubiquitous Soviet-era MLRS, used by armies and, in this case, terrorist organizations, all over the world. Although there have been slight variations on the theme, the “Grad” largely represents “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Here is a video of a similar, truck-mobile version being used in Ukraine.

Mount Meron is host to an IAF control center, which is used for air traffic control of both military and civilian aircraft. The use of Grad salvos marks somewhat of an escalation; in the last week, individual radars and domes were attacked with single-fire anti-tank weapons. The Israeli Air Force confirmed the damage of last week’s attacks and that the base was running on backup systems. Hezbollah appears to be expanding in their commitment to attacking Mt. Meron, as the use of a whole Grad system (and more rounds) represent a greater investment of resources.
